Informational Safety Alert – Fire Bottle Safety

In accordance with the 2015 BMW CCA Racing Rules, Section 3, Safety (Page 22), “On-board fire systems are required for all cars.”

SFI requirements specify that the fire bottle be inspected every two years, and replaced after 6 years. The reason for this is that there have been instances where the fire bottle corroded and ruptured. In addition, with the Aqueous Film-Forming Foam (AFFF) the material in the fire bottle (at times) solidified, which may impact the function of those systems.

The Safety Committee is recommending that all racers have their fire systems be inspected by a qualified service center to assure full functionality and, if necessary, repaired or replaced.

At this point, we are not mandating the SFI requirements for fire protection systems and are looking for equivalent SFI safety alternative for in-car fire protection systems. Potential future rule changes, if considered, will be proactively communicated to the racer community well before rule changes apply.
